Series 1 of record group 64-26 consists of general records relating to the Fish Commission for the years 1873-1924. Consists mainly of agreements, leases and letters of authority relating to land, equipment, facilities and services of the Commission. The records were originally accumulated by Fred Westerman and were collected by the Michigan Department of Conservation, Education and Information Division.

On April 19, 1873, the Michigan Legislature established the State Board of Fish Commissioners "to increase the product of the fisheries, and to make an appropriation therefor." The Board was incorporated on March 9, 1882 and was entrusted with the supervision of the fishing interests and the enforcement of the laws for the protection of fish and fisheries of the state. It continued to operate under Act 63, MPA 1885 which repealed former acts, defined duties, powers, and method of expending funds...
